An Altar in the World

An Altar in the World

We have one shot at life. One chance to live out our hopes and dreams, to become the person we want to be in this world. To do whatever it is that God calls you and me to do. Thankfully, within this one life, we have lots and lots of opportunities to respond and lots and lots of “do-overs,” thanks to God’s grace. I’m aware of how precious life is. Nothing’s sure except the reality of getting older and eventual death. I’ve dealt with cancer, with heart issues, and yet have managed to get through them and come out the other side. But, I know it’s not a guarantee. The normal bubble of denial that most of us have, has been burst in my case. I don’t know whether I’ll live another year much less another couple of decades, though I hope I do (if I have my mind and can use my hands!). I am so grateful for the life I’ve been given and that God will guide and direct it, if I but listen. What an amazing gift.

Barbara Brown Taylor has written a book called An Altar in the World. It is a lovely book about spiritual practices that is well written and helpful. But separate from the excellent content is the title. It alone speaks deeply to me. An altar in the world. That is what I want my life to be about. An altar, dedicated to God. A place of rest in the midst of life swirling around. A sacred space, simple and clean with art that draws one in, that points the way. A place to say “yes” to the Holy One in our midst.

I’m going to try and stay conscious of this image. To see how it changes me and my interactions with God and with others in the weeks to come. I invite you to join me and see what a difference it makes.

Good food for thought. I need to meditate on this idea of my life as an alter in the world. Thank you for sharing.
