What in the world does peace have to do with piecing, the stage in quiltmaking when you sew pieces of fabric together to form a larger pattern? That’s what this blog, Sacred Stitches, will explore. It will delve into the intersection of faith, art, peacebuilding and social justice and its call and impact on us all. Strategies and tools for spiritual renewal and self-care will also be included as well as showcasing the work of artists in these fields.
Art is a powerful tool that can be used for good or evil. It can fill us with its beauty, unite disparate groups, and bring healing out of trauma. It also can speak truth to power and demand change in the face of injustice. Yet, art can also be used to shame and humiliate, draw out and exaggerate our fears and pull a community apart. It’s power lies in its ability to stir our emotions, bypassing rational thought, and enter into the subconscious without words. There it can heal or fester.
The attached photo is a close-up of a quilt called Joy in the Mo(u)rning. I made it this past year for our oldest son’s partner. Our son died suddenly a year ago so you can imagine the trauma my family and I experienced. Making this quilt was incredibly healing. While I sewed, memories and prayers, pain, and joy all came flowing out as I stitched one block after another. Piecing really can bring the gift of peace.
